from drewproposestokelly
After 4+ years of dating his college sweetheart, Drew casually asked Kelly to go to dinner on November 10th, 2011. Always suspicious and engagement-minded, Kelly had a coworker snoop that day to see if Drew was planning to propose. When her coworker told her the holdup in proposing was that Drew hadn’t asked for her parents’ blessing yet, Kelly huffily declared that they “were never going to get engaged.” Once she got over her initial disappointment, she met Drew over at his house to get ready for the date {wearing the dress she’d worn on their first formal date freshman year}. Little did she know, she hadn’t wasted such an important dress after all!

while the week leading up to the event likely resembled a circus coming to town, the end product was an inclusive celebration in which everyone involved felt a small piece of ownership.

Taken from Style Me Pretty…

1. Is your favorite read Jane Eyre? Or maybe Pride and Prejudice? Yeahhh…. never read those. 2. Can you spot a peony from a mile away? And maybe even have a few fakies to fill your vases when peonies have come and gone? I do love peonies. But not as much as my best friend! 3. Do you see yourself in the prettiest of pretty oh so flowy frocks? I’d love to! I want to try on a bunch of types of dresses, but flowy sounds nice. Maybe a little more glam than flowy. 4. Do you think that fresh from the garden floral styles totally trump the more structured varieties? If they’re roses, yes!!!! Yes yes yes. 5. Do you kind of like seer sucker? or pin stripes? or bow ties? or any other variation of sweet men’s rags? I obsess over seersucker. And bowties! 6. Do you hit up flea markets just to find vintage hankies and perfect little bud vases? Absolutely! 7. Are you ditching the four inchers for a pretty pair of ballet flats? Eh, I’ll go with a nice 3-inch, perhaps. 8. Is your vow a handwritten love letter to your hubby? Complete with quotes from some of the songs most loved? I think we’ll go traditional. 9. Are you going for a cake that is either homemade or inspired by home grown design? Like yummy buttercream adorned with fresh flowers? Absolutely! 10. Have you found yourself buying burlap, raw linen, ribbon and lace in bulk even though you aren’t totally sure where it’s going to end up? And you just know it will be fabulous? Not quite yet, and burlap will NOT BE MAKING AN APPEARANCE, but you bet I’m making my own table runners! Well, then you just might be a Garden Bride. Maybe a garden bride hybrid!

Kendel incorporated so many cute little DIY and crafty details into her day. From ordering little origami birds (which we strung with fishing line from the trees out in front of her ceremony) to the cootie-catcher programs, printed coozies, and Polaroid picture “guest book,” her day was complete with all sorts of little lovelies.

Music: Blue Mother Tupelo (ceremony) and Jay Mays and Z Bro Band
Cake: Billie Mochow
Rentals: Music City Tents and Events
Transportation: Courtesy Limo
Engagement Ring: Tacori
Gown: Vera Wang “Diana”
I had the privilege of working with Kendel and Jeff on the planning of their September 24th wedding this year! Kendel looked stunning in her Vera Wang “Dianna” gown (bought on PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com - such a great resource!). She and Jeffrey got married at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens and had their reception at the garden’s Frist Center, a beautiful brick courtyard with strung-up Italian lights and gorgeous architecture. Lotus Blossom Photography captured the day.

Try not to get too wrapped up into the details to where you forget about the meaning of why you are there. It can be easy to get too focused on themes, color stories and DIY projects to prove your creativity. Select aspects of your event that are most important to you and prioritize, remembering that your centerpieces and welcome baskets do not define you. Let go of the little things that may ‘not go right’, nobody will remember them anyway. The planning of the wedding can be fun but stressful – decisions, budgets, timing, differing opinions, etc. Take a step back and remember what it is all about & work together to achieve your goals. Eric and I felt so satisfied and proud of each other for all of the hard work it took for us to get the day that we wanted. It taught us so much about our potential as a team to achieve our goals. Enjoy the journey!

lexiwiseman asked: Thank you for writing the reasons why it is good to not be engaged today. I'm only 18 and I find myself drooling over dresses and rings. I've been with my boyfriend for almost 2 and a half years, and we talk about getting married, our pastor even asked if we would promise that he would be the one to marry us when the time came. I know God has a reason that we aren't getting married SO YOUNG, but it is just so hard to wait sometimes. Your post was nice to see! I'm glad I'm not the only one! :)
well thank YOU for helping validate my feelings that there MUST be someone else who feels this way! :) God has reasons for the both of us and why we should wait, and how glorious it will be when our times come!! please feel encouraged about waiting and rest assured knowing the when the time is right, you’ll get the desires of your heart!

(Taken from my personal blog. :)
Sometimes you just have to remind yourself these things.
(Cushion cut, over 2 carats. Maybe even 3. Definitely not anything like what I will get!)
(A couple of my favorites. I’m practically living with LJ now, and I better live with Heather when she comes to Nashy this spring!!!!!!)
(My friend Callie’s wedding this past July. I’m in the navy & white dress looking scandalized:)
(At the wedding I coordinated a couple weeks ago!)
(I’m in the back with the very focused look and hands prepped for catching. Despite the fact that I didn’t.)
So, I came up with 43 reasons! That’s not too shabby, right? Comment below if you have other suggestions to add. :)

As a wedding blogger, what is your favorite part of other people’s weddings?
Oooh, I don’t even know if I could pinpoint it to just one thing… I really love seeing bride’s choice of dress, the decor, little details that are thoughtful and meaningful. Those are the best.
What do you anticipate will be your favorite part of your wedding?
Getting to marry my best friend! Finally saying “I do,” having it finally be MY day… ME getting to be the bride!
What will be the first piece of wedding planning you do?
One of the first people I will call after I say, “I will!” is my photographer, Kelly. And then we’ll decide on our wedding venue.
In your opinion, what is one vendor no wedding can be without?
I promise I’m not being biased, but having a wedding day director makes a world of difference.
Do you do an inspiration board?
Of course!
What is your favorite wedding memory?
My favorite wedding memory as a planner was watching Burning Las Vegas at that bomb-A wedding I assisted with last May. It was so perfect! And the show was like going to a concert!
What is your favorite planned-out wedding detail thus far?
So far, my favorite detail is that I’ll have both Drew’s and my grandmothers’ engagement ring diamonds on my bouquet!
Describe your wedding style.
My wedding style is glamorous, elegant, timeless, but still very Southern and even a little country.
If you could offer one piece of advice to planning brides, what would it be?
Besides hire a planner/coordinator, I’d say make sure that at the end of the day, you don’t lose sight of the fact that as long as you two walk away as a married couple, the day was successful.
Lastly, how will you make your wedding YOU?
Drew and I have several things we want to showcase our personalities and our relationship through at our wedding. Among these are the things paying homage to our heritage and families (the grandmothers’ diamonds, his mother’s bible, my father’s cheesecake, my mother’s Fostoria punch bowl, etc), as well as little details like serving s’mores (the dessert he made me on the trip where I fell in love with him), the table cards marking significant dates… so many little things! :)

After years of musing about my dream wedding, here’s what I’ve come up with.
1) Ring: This has morphed and changed and done all sorts of things from the moment I started looking to now. I like several different styles: round brilliant (european cut) set in a thin platinum band with tapered baguettes, pear-shaped diamond with a thin pave diamond band and halo, oval-shaped diamond with a thin pave diamond band and halo, cushion-cut in an antique setting with little emerald stone bedecking it… Drew’s got options. We (sort of) decided on one final ring we both love, but we’ll see! :)
2) Dress: When I envision my wedding day, I am wearing a cream sweetheart one-shouldered mermaid dress with a small train. This has been the same since the first day I fell in love with a wedding gown (February 2008 - a spring ‘08 Vera gown spotlighted in a bridal show at the Hermitage Hotel), and I imagine will likely be what I choose. I want to try on multiple dresses to see what I really love ON… I like the look of frothy tulle gowns and big pouffy ballgowns and might even entertain the idea of sleeves (ok probably not), so it’ll be a process.
3) Veil: I used to want a birdcage veil, but I’ve grown a little torn in the past few months. I love the idea of a pretty, long veil (not too long) but couldn’t justify spending the ridiculous amounts of money most veils go for these days. If I can borrow a gorgeous long one I’d love to do that. We’ll see.
4) Place: I also used to be completely set in doing our wedding and reception at the Governor’s Club in Brentwood. I love that place and pass it frequently, staring at the gorgeous couples getting married on spring and fall Saturdays. Recently, however, at the urging of my future fiance, I have been tossing around the idea of getting married in my parents’ backyard. My sister had her reception there, and although I want to give it a Kelly twist, I just love it. We could say our I-do’s in the field behind our house, take pretty pictures in front of the evergreen trees and by the stables (Belle Meade Plantation much, anyone?), have “cocktails” (or mocktails and Guinness, as it will more likely be) on the back deck (strung with Italian string lights and tiny pearlized bulbs), and dance in the backyard out in front of “the swamp” under a tent (which would double as our ceremony rain plan). I don’t know how the logistics will make it perfectly happen, but I’d LOVE if it could!
5) Time/Date: Drew and I are both really in love with September as our future wedding date. (Maybe even September 29th, 2012… ;) I’ve toyed with the ideas of March or December (since I love winter weddings and I don’t want to be super-stressed out with work around MY wedding date, and September/October is HEAVY wedding season), so that’s also to be decided. 5 o’clock.
6) Colors: These have been unwavering for as long as I can remember (ok, so they changed since I was 14) - pale buttercream yellow and espresso brown.
7) Flowers: I love garden roses, ranunculus, sweet peas, all sorts of pretty things. I want them to be fairly simple but gorgeous.
8) Size of Bridal Party: This will likely be 6 or 7 apiece. As much as I prefer small bridal parties, it’s so hard to choose. {Dani (MOH), Laken (MOH), Laurajean, Katie, Julianna, Sarah, Heather.}
9) Chairs: I’d love the fruitwood folding chairs from a rental company. I also want pretty “chair swag” on Drew’s and my seats to designate us as bride and groom.
10) Drew’s Gift: I plan to present Drew with boudoir pictures as my wedding gift to him!
11) Favors: I think we’re going to serve homemade cookies with milk shots or something similar as our “favors.” Or perhaps s’mores!
12) Honeymoon Locale: I want to go to Mexico! A mexican resort. Not too pricey, way super gorgeous, heaven.
13) Bridesmaids Dresses: Haven’t decided for sure on these either. I would ideally have everyone wear dresses that are cream on top and brown on bottom, but haven’t been able to find any. They might just be variations on brown and cream, or pale yellow.
14) Lingerie: I like pieces that are feminine, retro, pretty, lacy but not exclusively, and things that have pretty satin bows (like maybe one bow, I don’t want to look like I’m 5). Color-wise, I like navy and black and plum and mint and cream and a little fuchsia. Still not fond of red.
15) Reception music: I prefer live band over DJ, but I may be restricted in what I can have space-wise or logistically. I just want good music.
16) Decorations: I want draping where I can have it, little lights everywhere, candles in mason jars hanging from trees, chandeliers if I can manage, crystal cut glass details, just a bunch of pretty things.
17) Videographer: I would love to have a videographer if I can afford one. FocalPoint Cinematic is the best in the business, but my friend Cassie Hodges would do a phenom job if she didn’t live in Arkansas. I may see how much she’d charge to fly in and do it, but if I can’t, I might try to get a Watkins student or suck it up and live without a video. :( Or, I could always have Daddy whip out the recorder like he did for Dani’s wedding. Home-style!
18) Photography: Kelly Cummings of Spindle Photography. First person I’m calling after I’m engaged. Ok maybe after my parents & sister.: )
19) Reveal: We are most certainly doing a first look. Location TBD after we pick out our final wedding venue!
20) Readings: Oooh, I need to start collecting these and picking out who will do them.
21) Vows: Personalized but not self-written vows.
22) Food/Drink: Catering is also undecided. I’d love to incorporate a grits bar! We might have limited wine, but we’ll definitely have Guinness Stout for Drew. I’d like to have champagne (one bottle of Veuve Cliquot) for toasting. Maybe I could have a signature mint mimosa as a drinking option? No one can get drunk on mimosas.
23) Toast: Stephen (Best Man) and Dani will be giving toasts. It will be a riot undoubtedly.
24) Music: There are certain songs that must be played— “In My Arms” by Jon Foreman will be our first dance. We also want to play “Over the Hills and Far Away” and “Wonderful Tonight.” I might want to do “Another One Bites the Dust” for my bouquet toss and “It’s Raining Men” for the garter toss. Is that gay? Haha.
25) Number of guests: 150?
26) Hair & Makeup: Dani’s doing my makeup, Laken’s doing my hair. Unless I magically come up with $260 to hire Amy Lynn Larwig, but my matrons of honor are amazing.
27) Ring Bearers/Flower Girls: Two (or three) flowergirls, two (or three) bell ringers. The (or three) refers to my unborn future niece or nephew… my sister is with child! {Laney, Della, James, Riley, and Bippity Boppity Boudreau.}
28) Car: If we have the wedding at Governor’s Club, we’re borrowing Drew’s dad’s Porche or Mercedes to getaway. If we have it at home, we’re probably going away in my Yaris. Haha.
29): Wedding Night Suite: I think I’d like to stay at Opryland Hotel the night before we leave for our honeymoon!
30) Wedding Preparation Workout: Hot Yoga + Pure Barre.
31) Cake: I can never decide on cake. I love coconut cake, white wedding cake, chocolate cake, infused cake. All I know is I want it simple, elegant, delicious, and frosted with buttercream!
32) Groom’s Cake: Drew wants my father’s signature cheesecake. Done and done.
33) Guestbook: I think we’d like a picture book of our engagement shots, or something meaningful that we’ll actually look at.
34) Walk down aisle: I’ll be walking down the aisle to “Finding Hope,” written by Drew.
35) Coordinator: This is one of those things I KNOW I need, but have no idea who to use.
36) Formal exit: I like sparklers, but it’s overdone. I like glitter, but don’t want my dress to be covered in it for all time. I like confetti, but it’s so-so. I do NOT like bubbles. Exit TBD.
37) Menswear: The men of our wedding will be wearing gray suits with suspenders, bowties, maybe cowboy boots. :) Maybe just Drew!
38) Linens: I think I’d like ivory linens with pale yellow seersucker napkins. This may be a DIY project!
Pictures to come!
In my sorority, we have something called a White Candle Ceremony whenever one of our members gets lavaliered, engaged, married, or pregnant. A pretty white candle is passed around while we sing a song, and whomever is the lucky lady blows out the flame at the appropriate time (1st round - lavaliered, 2nd round - engaged, etc).
I have waited my entire collegiate experience for the moment when I get to have MY very own white candle ceremony! It’s something important enough for me to keep a secret so that I can have mine. While I don’t know when or how or at what point I’ll get engaged, but the prospect of having a white candle makes my heart beat a million times a minute. I’m serious. Even if I’m just thinking about it, my heart goes off on its own little drum rhythm for a good ten minutes. Goodness gracious!

And the funny part? I think it’s been this way for a good long while now. Perhaps the closer I get (as time goes on) the thumpier my heart gets. Mmm.
